UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has challenged Israel’s claims to justify its December 27 raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, stating the allegations that Hamas used the facility for military purposes lack credible evidence and contradict publicly available information.
The Israeli military arrested several medical staff during the raid, including the hospital’s director Dr Hussam Abu Safiya. As one of the last operational hospitals in northern Gaza, Kamal Adwan’s forced closure has intensified the collapse of the region’s healthcare system.
Turk called for an independent investigation into Israel’s attacks on healthcare infrastructure and facilities in Gaza, emphasising the need for accountability and transparency.
Meanwhile, the WHO has expressed serious concerns about the fate of the detained medical staff and has called for their immediate release.
