Kara Swisher, one of the most influential tech journalists in the U.S., told DW’s bureau chief Ines Pohl that Elon Musk is supporting Germany’s AfD to cause problems.
"He is supporting this particular party to cause problems. He has issues with regulatory matters concerning European leaders, and he will do it over and over again across the world as he sees fit."
"Any country that has the audacity to say that it wants to protect its consumers will be under siege. Europeans have been much more stringent in holding U.S. tech companies accountable. But that’s why they’re coming to attack you now." She says that the core interest of the tech billionaires is that they do not want any regulator to tell them what to do or what to sell in any way whatsoever.
Regarding the threats of the Trump administration towards journalists, she said: "We can’t be cowed by these bullies. They certainly have a lot of power and influence on their side. But, you know, they’ve tried before; they can try again. We are going to have to fight them everywhere we can and understand that the independent press is critical to the operation of democracy. And there are people who think that."
Asked about whether Trump will be able to accept the popularity of Elon Musk and be willing to share the stage, she said: "I just don’t know if either of them can afford to do that; they sort of need each other in terms of power and influence."
