The President of Mexico just responded to President Trump’s plan to rename the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” by pulling out an old map of Mexican territories that are now part of the US.

“Why don’t we call it Mexican America? Sounds nice, doesn’t it?” She says Trump can’t rename the Gulf because the United Nations recognizes it as the Gulf of Mexico. “I believe that yesterday President Trump was misinformed…” Does this lady think she can win against the man who bought Mar-a-Lago for pennies and turned it into one of the best properties in the world? She should call the former President of Mexico and ask him just how tough Trump is.

• The funny thing is that Trump said ‘Gulf of America’, not ‘Gulf of the United States of America’. North America, Central America, South America – it makes sense that it should be called the Gulf of America.  Bob Allen

Maybe parts of the United States of America USED to be called Mexican America, but back then it was owned by Spain just like the Northeast portion was owned by France. You are referencing maps and names from 1609 when you didn’t even get your independence from Spain until 1810! What are both regions called now? How did we change the names? Who won the Mexican American war in 1848? Be lucky you even have a country and we didn’t just keep it back in 1848, although I’m sure it would be in better shape now if we did. – Disgracer
• The actual war between Mexican and Spanish colonists started in 1810. It did not end until 1821 with the treaty of Cordoba. Spain did not officially recognize Mexico’s independence until the signing of the Santa María–Calatrava Treaty in 1836. In 1848 after taking Mexico City, an agreement was made and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was drafted. It ended the war, and Mexico recognized the cession of present-day Texas, California, Nevada, and Utah as well as parts of present-day Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The U.S. agreed to pay $15 million for the physical damage of the war and assumed $3.25 million of debt already owed by the Mexican government to U.S. citizens. Mexico relinquished its claims on Texas and accepted the Rio Grande as its northern border with the United States.
