š„Over 100,000 residents have been evacuated due to at least five separate wildfires in the Los Angeles area, including one in the heart of historic Hollywood. At least five people have been killed by the fast-moving flames, as authorities struggle to manage the scale and speed of the unfolding disaster.
šļøš°The Pacific Palisades fire has likely destroyed hundreds of multi-million-dollar homes and is expected to become one of the costliest wildfires on record. Private climate monitoring company AccuWeather estimates losses could reach up to $57 billion.
šæš„Southern California endured two decades of drought, followed by two years of exceptionally heavy rainfall, which led to rapid vegetation growth. This created an abundance of fuel for fires, and with no significant rain for the past eight months, the region remains primed for catastrophic wildfires.
