Aidarous al-Zubaidi, vice president of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, praised the return of President Donald Trump as key to curb the Iran-backed Houthis. In an interview with DW’s Ben Fajzullin at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, he called for a stronger U.S.-led assault on the rebel group.
The Houthis have been attacking Israel, as well as commercial Western vessels in the Red Sea, in what they said was solidarity with Palestinians in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The Houthis control the northwest of Yemen. The rest is held by the Southern Transitional Council, headed by Zubaidi. The armed group wants an independent southern Yemen.
