German opposition leader Friedrich Merz says he’ll push forward with a vote in parliament on tough new immigration legislation, possibly with help from the far right.
The conservative is the frontrunner to become Germany’s next chancellor after February’s elections. Merz wants to bring back permanent controls on German borders and turn away migrants without proper documentation.
