“It’s our responsibility to elevate the devastation that is taking place (in Gaza)”
On Tuesday, Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman held a press conference outside Congress with six other lawmakers, calling for an immediate embargo on US arms shipments to Israel and a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Coleman accused Israel of committing “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza—terms many US policymakers refuse to use—and said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unilaterally ended the US-brokered truce “to follow his own agenda.”
She told TRT World that she hopes to rally support for “a resolution or legislation that will cut off funding” to Israel’s military.
Coleman was joined by Representatives Ilhan Omar, Greg Casar, Mark Pocan, Delia Ramirez, Nydia Velazquez, and Ayanna Pressley, along with US Army veteran Dr. Adam Hamwy, who has volunteered as a surgeon in Gaza, and Sami Shaban, who has lost 40 family members there.
