Marine Le Pen, who was barred from running for political office for five years on Monday after a court found her guilty of embezzlement, is credited with transforming what was once known as the National Front into a serious political force. Just nine years ago, a court in France fined her late father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, for a third time, for calling the gas chambers during the Holocaust a “detail of history”. Since then, Marine Le Pen publically broke with her father, and set about attempting to clean up the party’s image, including renaming it the National Rally.
