Thousands of Palestinians killed in Gaza genocide remain unidentified due to DNA testing shortages

As Israel continues to blockade DNA testing equipment, along with countless other necessities, from entering Gaza, thousands of Palestinians killed since October 7 have remained unidentified and unclaimed by any potential living family members, according to medical officials on the ground.

Many of these corpses remain in storage for months, by which time soft tissue begins to decompose, leaving only bones.

Most of the deceased have also been burned or entirely disfigured by Israel’s relentless bombardment of the besieged enclave, making it difficult to identify them using basic procedures such as measuring bones, examining dental records, and reviewing personal effects.

According to Dr. Imad Shehadeh of Al-Shifa Hospital, these conditions have resulted in only approximately 2% of the bodies at Al-Shifa being identified.
