A dramatic plume of ash rose over Japan’s southern Kagoshima Prefecture as the Sakurajima volcano erupted on May 15.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency reported multiple eruptions, with ash reaching up to 3,000 metres above the crater and causing low visibility in surrounding areas, as authorities warned of heavy local ashfall, urging residents to “refrain from unnecessary outings and driving.”
