On May 15—the anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, or catastrophe—the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) presented a model bill on Parliament Hill, offering MPs a roadmap for addressing Palestinian human rights.
The proposed legislation includes seven key measures: recognition of the State of Palestine, a legal definition of anti-Palestinian racism, emergency immigration measures for Gaza residents, a ban on goods from illegal settlements, sanctions on individuals implicated in war crimes, an arms embargo and a ban on military recruitment in Canada for foreign states accused of human rights abuses.
“Canada must chart a new, principled course—one grounded in human rights, international law, and moral courage,” NCCM stated. “At a time when illegal annexation and mass displacement are once again being discussed by world leaders, Canada must act now.”
