Portugal held its third election in as many years. The ballot was called in March after Prime Minister Luís Montenegro failed to win a confidence vote in parliament — a vote that he himself had proposed.
Exit polls suggest that the incumbent centre-right Democratic Alliance received the most votes, with the centre-left Socialists in second place. Support for the far-right Chega party appeared to rise to 20 per cent, putting them in third place.
The Portuguese political landscape has become increasingly fragmented in recent years, with rising house prices and rents, as well as a sharp rise in immigration, becoming key issues.
