Is the Vatican about to embark on a peace-making role to end the war between Russia and Ukraine? US President Donald Trump has suggested that new Pope Leo the 14th could host ceasefire talks. Kyiv and the EU have welcomed the initiative, though there are no firm plans in place yet. The Kremlin has denied any suggestion that talks in Rome are being planned for next week. But irrespective of whether Leo DOES mediate between Russia and Ukraine, it DOES indicate a new drive by the Vatican to project its diplomatic clout under the new pontiff.
