Part of Italy’s Mount Etna collapsed on 2 June, resulting in a massive eruption cloud consisting of volcanic gas, ash, and rock. A lava fountain also formed as a result of explosive activity at the site of the collapse.
The eruption cloud, known as a pyroclastic flow, is a current of hot gas that grows rapidly and can be dangerous to life in the surrounding area. Tourists near the volcano fled the scene as the cloud grew in size, but no evacuation order has yet been issued.
