What damage has Ukraine’s covert drone attacks on Russia actually caused? | DW News

Ukrainian drones have reportedly hit key Russian air bases, targeting TU-22 and TU-95 strategic bombers—aircraft central to Russia’s cruise missile operations. While Ukraine claims up to 40 bombers were destroyed, Russian sources say the number is much lower. Independent experts estimate around 13 aircraft may have been damaged or destroyed.

These aging bombers, no longer in production, are irreplaceable—and their loss is not just material. Analysts say the strikes have dealt a serious blow to Kremlin morale and the image of Russia’s military power. The big question now: how will President Putin respond?
