US Representative Maxine Waters condemned the Trump administration’s decision to deploy 2,000 National Guardsmen against crowds protesting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles, California, on June 8.
Waters emphasised that LA is a “sanctuary city”, where immigrants can largely seek refuge without fear of legal repercussions – going on further to say, “We know Trump doesn’t like us. We know they need to try to use us as an example. He’s going to try to go to us so that he has martial law.”
Trump announced on June 9 that he intended to increase the military presence on the ground in LA with the deployment of an additional 700 US Marines. The office of the Governor of California responded to this in a post on X, saying the move “[mobilises] the best in class branch of the U.S. military against its own citizens.”
The state of California announced on 9 June it planned to sue the Trump administration for the deployment of troops in response to recent anti-ICE demonstrations, which are protected under the United States’ constitution.
