A tragic accident struck on Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani, where a 27-year-old Brazilian tourist, Juliana Marins, lost her life after falling off a cliff. Juliana was hiking with five friends on Saturday when she slipped along the steep side of the volcano, which stands at 3,726 metres, Indonesia’s second-highest peak.
The evacuation faced major challenges due to thick fog and steep terrain. A helicopter could not be used, forcing rescuers to conduct a manual retrieval operation. After a six-hour rescue effort on Wednesday, her body was lifted with ropes and carried on a stretcher to the nearest post. The Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency confirmed that Marins’ family had been informed and accepted the situation.
