How heat waves threaten global railway networks | Transforming Business

Rising temperatures are causing steel rails to bend out of shape, forcing train operators to slow or stop trains in hot weather. Floods and landslides are washing away parts of the track. Rail is one of the most efficient and climate-friendly forms of freight and passenger travel, but also the most vulnerable to extreme weather events caused by climate change. Though countries like the U.S. and Germany have pledged to fund rail infrastructure upgrades and expansions, climate adaption on a mass-scale doesn’t appear to be a budget priority. In this episode, we explore how heatwaves, flooding and other extreme weather events are bending the backbone of rail infrastructure — and what the industry is doing about it.
