“This is the most important issue of our time globally”
Why is Latin America one of the most pro-Palestinian regions in the world?
TRT World traveled to Mexico City—thousands of miles away from Gaza—where thousands of activists have been protesting every month over the past two years.
Mexico doesn’t have a large Muslim or Middle Eastern population, but many here say Gaza is a fight for humanity.
Activists point to Latin America’s shared history of military dictatorships, European colonialism, US imperialism, and genocide against Indigenous peoples—factors they say make the Palestinian cause deeply relatable.
Just last month, a group of scholars organised a fast for Gaza, activists painted pro-Palestinian slogans on national monuments, and hundreds of thousands marched to demand an end to Israeli bombings in Gaza, Iran, and across the region.
In 2024, Mexico joined South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. And in March, it officially recognised the State of Palestine.
But activists say these steps are not enough. They want Mexico to cut diplomatic ties with Israel—just as it once did with Franco’s Spain and Hitler’s Germany.
They’re also calling on Mexican universities to end partnerships with Israeli institutions and urging the United Nations to expel Israel for its crimes.
