Britain has owned Gibraltar – an exclave on the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula – since 1713. To some, it makes no sense why it’s a British Overseas Territory, yet it’s been intertwined with British history for centuries. Over the years, it’s seen multiple referenda (in 1968 and again in 2002) and in both cases the people of Gibraltar have overwhelmingly wanted to remain British.
This week, Westminster Watch heads to Gibraltar where Nick is joined by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia, former Gibraltarian MP and Historian Marlene Hassan Nahon and Chair of All Party Parliamentary Group on Overseas Territories Andrew Rosindell MP to discuss what the UK’s relationship with its overseas territories should be, and why a place 2,000 kilometers away from Britain is determined to stay part of it.
