Not So Woke: James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Flies High with $122M Domestic Debut, Signaling DC Reboot Success

Superman was rumored to be woke, and MAGA folks attacked before seeing it. But other than actors and executives behind the film being woke with their own personal opinions, they managed to mostly keep their political opinions out of the film, making fans tell others to see the DC hit. The politics in it was very minor…. This is the way…. to keep your woke opinions to yourself and just entertain people. That’s what we buy tickets to see movies for. Michael Knowles review is below, and he detests all superhero movies. But he touches on the absence of politics as well.

James Gunn’s Superman has delivered a strong launch, marking a pivotal reboot for Warner Bros.-owned DC Studios and its iconic superhero franchise. The film opened to $122 million domestically across 4,135 theaters and $95 million from 79 international markets, yielding a global total of $217 million. While international performance was moderate—reflecting the character’s enduring American patriot image, as seen in Zack Snyder’s 2013 Man of Steel—the debut defied superhero fatigue. On opening day, President Donald Trump even shared a meme of himself in Superman attire on social media.

Michael Knowles REVIEWS The NewSupermanMovie (2025)

Costing $225 million before marketing, Superman is Gunn’s first project as writer-director and co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, appointed by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav in 2022 to unify and revitalize the brand. This release caps a challenging period for DC, which has struggled with recent underperformers. Box Office Highlights and Comparisons Superman became the first superhero film in a year to surpass $100 million domestically, following Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine ($211 million in 2024). It’s only the third 2025 Hollywood title to achieve this, after Warner’s A Minecraft Movie ($162.8 million) and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch ($146 million). In DC history, it’s one of just three films in eight years to open above $100 million, joining Wonder Woman ($103.3 million in 2017) and The Batman ($134 million in 2022).
It outpaced Man of Steel ($116.7 million) as the biggest solo Superman debut, beating Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns ($84 million six-day in 2006, including $52.5 million weekend). However, it trails DC’s all-time high of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million in 2016). Gunn’s prior Marvel work includes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5 million), his personal best opening, and Vol. 3 ($118.2 million). Superman ranks as his strongest after Guardians Vol. 2. Elsewhere, Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth crossed $500 million globally, highlighting a busy summer slate with male-skewing films like F1: The Movie.
Audience Reception and DemographicsPositive buzz positions Superman for longevity. It earned an A- CinemaScore (matching Man of Steel, exceeding Superman Returns‘ B+), a 94% audience Rotten Tomatoes score, and 82% from critics. Exit polls show 68% male viewers, with two-thirds aged 18-34; diversity and word-of-mouth could expand appeal. Premium formats like IMAX contributed 47% domestically ($30 million from IMAX alone) and nearly 50% worldwide.
Cast, Crew, and DC’s Strategic ShiftStarring David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, the ensemble includes Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Beck Bennett (Steve Lombard), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), and Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific).Zaslav praised Gunn’s Missouri roots and personal connection to DC characters as key to the reboot. “His love for the DC world runs deep,” Zaslav said. Upcoming slate includes Supergirl, Clayface, and HBO Max’s Lanterns, part of a 10-year plan. Warner celebrates Superman as its sixth consecutive No. 1 opener and fifth above $145 million—an industry first—bolstering hits like A Minecraft Movie and Sinners.
Expert ViewsWarners’ Jeff Goldstein highlighted regained fan trust: “They’ve enthusiastically embraced our first entry in an exciting new theatrical universe.” Analyst Paul Dergarabedian called it a “spark to ignite future success” for DC. Fandango’s Shawn Robbins noted it as an “effective launch pad for Gunn’s new era.”This debut not only combats genre fatigue but charts a promising course for DC.  Beth, associate editor at Whatfinger, with X Posts, Youtube and clips, and Grok

  • I waited a day longer than expected to watch this movie/remake/new take on Superman. If you know me, you know The DC world of Superman is my favorite character. The movie was surprisingly better than expected, I thought I was going to be let down and fake I liked it. Well I didn’t hate it. David Corenswet is not Henry Cavill but no one is Henry. We have to love or at least like the new Superman and give him a chance. As for this story line, it was good, some true as corny stuff like Green Lantern… I will not spoil the storyline but go see it and give it a chance. – Eddie Pham
  • As of today, the new Superman movie is now out. The same movie that is about…an immigrant? According to James Gunn, yes. Can we just get past the wokeness, and stop twisting our amazing American superheroes into political agendas?

What many on the Right expected the movie to be…  LMAO – perhaps justifiably so knowing how horrible Hollywood has been to America, freedom and President Trump.
