Cory “Spartacus” Booker leads dramatic Senate walkout over Trump judicial nominee Emile Bove.

NOW: Cory “Spartacus” Booker leads dramatic Senate walkout over Trump judicial nominee Emile Bove. You’d think this was a Netflix drama. Instead, it’s the U.S. Senate. As Republicans prepared to advance Bove’s nomination in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Booker erupted at Chairman Grassley….then led fellow Democrats in a performative walkout. He shouted across the room: “You have to follow the precedents and procedures of the committee! This is OUTRAGEOUS!” “What are you afraid of?!” These are not serious people.

On Thursday, July 17, 2025, Democratic senators, including Sen. Cory Booker from New Jersey, got really upset and walked out of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. They were protesting how Republicans were handling the nomination of Emil Bove, a lawyer picked by President Donald Trump to become a federal judge on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Booker, who some people think might run for president in 2028, argued loudly with the committee chairman, Sen. Chuck Grassley from Iowa, for about eight minutes before joining the walkout.
The trouble started when Grassley, who is 91 years old, refused to let Democrats talk more about serious allegations against Bove. Booker wanted to bring up claims from a whistleblower named Erez Reuveni, a former Justice Department lawyer. Reuveni says that while Bove was a top official in Trump’s Justice Department, he encouraged ignoring court orders about deporting migrants and even suggested telling judges “f— you.” Documents released by Democrats seem to back up these claims, but Bove calls them false.

Booker shouted into his microphone, “Why are you doing this? This is outrageous!” He accused Grassley of breaking the committee’s rules and not following advice from the Senate’s parliamentarian, who helps with procedures. “This is wrong! You violate your own rules,” Booker said. He added, “What are you afraid of, about even debating this, putting things on the record, hearing from every senator?” Even though Booker called Grassley a “good man” and “decent man,” he said the process was “absolutely insane” and hurt the committee’s reputation.
As things heated up, Sen. Mazie Hirono from Hawaii yelled, “This is a kangaroo court!” which means she thought the hearing was unfair and rigged.
Other Democrats, like ranking member Sen. Dick Durbin from Illinois, joined in the protest. A big group of Democratic senators and their staff then stood up and left the room while Grassley tried to call for a vote.
Bove is a controversial choice for judge because of his past. He used to be a prosecutor in New York, but some say he was abusive there. He defended Trump in the Stormy Daniels hush-money case (which Trump lost) and later got a high job in the Justice Department. In that role, he fired prosecutors working on January 6 riot cases and helped drop a corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Democrats worry he’s too loyal to Trump and won’t be fair as a judge for life. Over 900 former Justice Department lawyers and dozens of retired judges have asked the Senate to reject him. Bove also wouldn’t say if a president could run for a third term or clearly condemn the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Even after the Democrats left, Republicans voted 11-10 along party lines to move Bove’s nomination forward to the full Senate, along with four other Trump picks. Republicans are rushing to confirm judges because they’ve been slower than past presidents. Democrats say the vote might not count because rules were broken, and they could ask the Senate parliamentarian to decide.
On X (formerly Twitter), the walkout got a lot of attention. Many users shared videos calling it a “tantrum” or “political theater.” For example, one post said, “Cory Booker LOSES his cool as Democrats STORM out… Pure political theater — nothing more than a staged stunt.” Another called Booker “Spartacus at it again” and said Republicans just ignored him and voted. Supporters of Democrats saw it as standing up against a bad nominee, while critics mocked it as over-the-top drama. This event shows how divided Congress is over Trump’s court picks, especially with elections coming up.
