The number of the most serious water pollution incidents rose by 60% last year, according to data covering England.
An amber weather warning covered a large section of the southeast of England. Data shows water companies quickly started discharging from sewage overflows, particularly Thames Water and Southern Water.
One campaigner said: "The Thames should not be in the state it is now, there is no excuse for it".
