US Nuclear Submarines: Unmatched Capabilities in a World of Rising Threats

Russia has downplayed Donald Trump’s orders to move nuclear submarines closer to Russia, warning against nuclear rhetoric. Last week, Trump ordered two submarines to “be positioned in the appropriate regions” in response to what he called “highly provocative” comments by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. But what are US nuclear submarines capable of, and how do they stack up against the Russian fleet? The Security Brief’s Mikey Kay, a former Senior Officer in the British Military, and Bob Fancy, a former Submarine Commanding Officer in the British Navy, explain.

US Nuclear Submarines: Unmatched Capabilities in a World of Rising Threats

In a recent BBC News video (Above), experts delve into the extraordinary prowess of US nuclear submarines, questioning their capabilities and how they measure up against formidable adversaries like Russia.

Featuring insights from Mikey Kay, a former Senior Officer in the British Military, and Bob Fancy, a former Submarine Commanding Officer in the British Navy, the segment underscores the strategic edge these underwater behemoths provide in maintaining global deterrence. As tensions escalate with Russia and China expanding their naval ambitions, understanding the US submarine fleet’s superior technology, stealth, and firepower becomes crucial. This article builds on that foundation, exploring the capabilities of US nuclear subs and comparing them to those of key nations: Russia, China, the UK, France, and India. Drawing from the latest 2025 data, it’s clear that while challengers are closing gaps, America’s undersea dominance remains unparalleled. The United States operates the world’s largest and most advanced fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, with all 66-70 vessels relying on nuclear propulsion for unlimited range and endurance, limited only by crew provisions.

This fleet includes four main classes: the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), Los Angeles-class attack submarines (SSNs), Seawolf-class SSNs, and the cutting-edge Virginia-class SSNs. The Ohio-class, often called “boomers,” are the backbone of America’s nuclear triad, each carrying up to 20 Trident II D5 missiles with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), capable of striking targets over 7,000 miles away with pinpoint accuracy. These subs displace 18,750 tons submerged, dive to depths exceeding 800 feet, and achieve speeds of 25+ knots, all while remaining virtually undetectable due to advanced acoustic silencing and pump-jet propulsors. Attack submarines like the Virginia-class exemplify versatility. At 7,800 tons, they feature modular payloads for Tomahawk cruise missiles (up to 40), torpedoes, mines, and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).

Their Large Aperture Bow (LAB) sonar arrays and fly-by-wire controls enhance intelligence gathering, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and special operations support. The Seawolf-class, though fewer in number (three vessels), are the quietest subs ever built, with enhanced ice-breaking capabilities for Arctic operations. Overall, US subs excel in stealth—often quieter than ocean background noise—allowing them to shadow enemy vessels undetected. Recent deployments, such as sending the USS Georgia (an Ohio-class converted for guided missiles) to the Middle East with 154 Tomahawk missiles, demonstrate their rapid response to threats like those from Iran or Russia. In comparison, Russia’s submarine fleet, totaling around 63 vessels with about 30-40 nuclear-powered, relies on a mix of legacy Soviet designs and modern upgrades.

The Borei-class SSBNs, similar in role to the Ohio-class, carry 16 Bulava missiles each, with a range of 5,800 miles, but they’ve faced reliability issues and are noisier, making them more vulnerable to detection. Russia’s Yasen-M-class SSNs, armed with hypersonic Zircon missiles, pose a significant threat with speeds up to Mach 8, outpacing US defenses in some scenarios. However, Russia’s fleet suffers from maintenance woes and sanctions, limiting operational readiness. While Russia boasts more submarines overall, US experts note that American subs are “significantly quieter” and more technologically advanced, giving them an edge in cat-and-mouse undersea games.

As highlighted in the BBC video, US subs “stack up” favorably against Russia’s, especially in stealth and endurance. China’s rapid naval expansion includes 61 submarines, with 12-19 nuclear-powered, focusing on the Type 094 (Jin-class) SSBNs and Type 093 (Shang-class) SSNs. The Type 094 carries 12 JL-2 missiles with a 4,600-mile range, but early models were notoriously noisy, akin to 1970s-era Soviet subs. Improvements in the Type 096 aim for quieter operations and longer-range JL-3 missiles, potentially matching US capabilities by the late 2020s. China’s SSNs, while numerous, lag in acoustic stealth and sensor tech, relying more on quantity than quality.

By 2025, China plans to add six more SSBNs, enhancing its second-strike capability in the South China Sea. Yet, US Virginia-class subs outperform in multi-domain warfare, with better integration of AI and drones for ASW. Allied nations like the UK and France bolster Western capabilities. The UK operates 10 nuclear subs, including four Vanguard-class SSBNs armed with Trident missiles shared with the US, and Astute-class SSNs known for their Spearfish torpedoes and Tomahawk compatibility. The upcoming Dreadnought-class will enhance stealth and cyber defenses. France’s nine nuclear subs feature the Triomphant-class SSBNs with M51 missiles (6,200-mile range) and Barracuda-class SSNs emphasizing modularity.

Both nations’ fleets are highly capable but smaller, relying on NATO interoperability with the US. India, with three nuclear subs, is an emerging player. The Arihant-class SSBNs carry K-15 missiles (466-mile range), with upgrades planned for longer-range K-4s. While advancing, India’s fleet is limited in scope and technology compared to superpowers, focusing on regional deterrence against Pakistan and China. Nuclear vs. diesel-electric subs highlight another divide. Diesel subs, used by many nations including China and Russia for some vessels, are quieter when running on batteries but require surfacing to recharge, limiting endurance. Nuclear propulsion, standard in US, UK, and French fleets, offers strategic advantages in global patrols.

Budget-wise, the US leads with massive investments, spending billions on the Columbia-class SSBNs to replace Ohios by 2031. Russia and China follow, with Moscow allocating funds for Borei upgrades and Beijing accelerating Type 096 production.
