Humanitarian airdrops draw large crowds in Gaza amid widespread starvation

On Aug. 12, military cargo planes airdropped humanitarian aid into blockaded Gaza, drawing large crowds to Deir al-Balah, where many waited for hours under the scorching sun.

Israel’s 18-year blockade – tightened in March 2025 with the closure of all crossings – has blocked aid and deepened the crisis for Gaza’s 2.4 million residents.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says five people, including two children, died from starvation and severe malnutrition in the past 24 hours, bringing the Israeli-induced starvation death toll since October 2023 to 227, including 103 children.
