Spain’s La Vuelta disrupted by pro-Palestine protesters

Spain’s La Vuelta cycling race was disrupted just 3 km from the finish line on Wednesday by pro-Palestine protesters.

The three-week event (August 23–September 14) has faced near-daily protests since entering Spain on August 27 from Italy and France.

Demonstrators have called for the removal of Israel-Premier Tech, the Israeli team owned by Sylvan Adams, a close associate of PM Benjamin Netanyahu.
Spain’s youth and children’s minister, Sira Rego, urged the race director to expel the Israeli team, writing:
“The real violence is not on the streets of our cities or on the banners of our young people; it is in the daily tragedies suffered by Palestinians under occupation and siege.”

She also questioned whether La Vuelta’s values were compatible with hosting a team linked to “a state that violates international law, perpetuates genocide, and massacres a defenseless population.”

Spanish civil society groups have launched a campaign to bar Israel from international competitions while it faces accusations of war crimes and genocide in Gaza.
