UNGA backs Palestinian statehood bid

The UN General Assembly on Friday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution endorsing the New York Declaration, which calls for recognition of the State of Palestine and advancing a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian question.

The measure, introduced by France and Saudi Arabia, had already been co-signed by 17 countries during an international conference at UN headquarters in July.

Only 10 states—including the US and Israel—voted against, while 142 backed it and 12 abstained.

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon said: “Endorsement of this so-called declaration is not a serious attempt at peacemaking.”
