At the United Nations General Assembly, a series of European nations, including France and Belgium, have followed the UK, Canada and Australia in formally recognising the State of Palestine.
The precedent was set in 2024 by Ireland, Norway and Spain.
Critics have questioned the viability of a Palestinian state – given recent Israeli land grabs in the occupied West Bank, and the Gaza genocide – but Neale Richmond, an Irish Foreign Minister, insists recognition can restore dignity and sovereignty to Palestinians.
Meanwhile Israel continues its assault on the Gaza Strip – something that amounts to genocide, according to a report by a United Nations Commission of Inquiry released in mid-September.
Commissioner Chris Sidoti, a human rights lawyer, tells Bigger Than Five that both recognition of Palestine and action to stop the killing are essential.
