Dr. Hedia Belhadj is a seasoned voice in the global movement for women’s rights and reproductive care. She is President of the Groupe Tawhida Ben Cheikh, named after one of North Africa’s pioneering physicians. In the year 2000, UN member states laid out bold objectives of the UN Millennium Development Goals, addressing the world’s most pressing challenges related to poverty, health, education, and sustainability. A quarter of a century later, women across the globe face the volatile and hostile terrain of today’s increasingly oppressive geopolitical landscape. Over the decades, Dr. Belhadj has witnessed both the triumphs and the dramatic regressions in having free access to contraception and reproductive healthcare. Despite years of global commitments, nearly 270 million women and adolescents worldwide still cannot access modern contraception. From the Arab Spring region, where progress has been considerably reversed, to South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, where structural inequities persist, Dr. Belhadj helps us see that these are not isolated failures, but reflections of a deeper struggle. There is also a broader battle brewing from anti-rights movements as they seek to roll back hard-won freedoms in gender equality, reproductive autonomy, and social justice.
