A year ago, Jelena Popadic was focused entirely on her medical studies. Today, she is interested in politics — and the future of her country. Together with others, she started a movement in Novi Sad that has now spread throughout the country. The collapse of a train station roof a year ago triggered the protests and became a symbol of corruption and government failure. Jelena regularly organizes demonstrations, and she knows full well that she is taking a big risk. The Serbian security forces sometimes use brutal force against opposition activists, and Jelena herself has been beaten up. Workers and farmers are now also showing solidarity with the protesting students. Farmer Dragan Radivojevic says, "The students have opened our eyes. They are giving us hope that things will get better." The courage to stand up for a new Serbia is spreading. A report by Miodrag Soric.
