As part of its austerity budget for 2026, the French government had proposed a tax on holdings – entities wealthy individuals often use to register their assets to protect them from taxation – in a nod to popular demand for ‘fiscal justice’, set to bring in a billion euro. After more than seventy discussed amendments, the bill was adopted by Parliament to the dismay of the Socialist party who believe its scope is too narrow.
