US Shutdown: Why are some Senate Democrats now backing a Republican funding bill? | DW News

The bipartisan stalemate, now in its sixth week, was broken when eight Democrats backed a Republican funding bill that omits a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies, a key Democratic demand. The compromise still needs approval in the House of Representatives. If the deal passes the House of Representatives, it will bring an end to the country’s longest government shutdown and restore federal funding through January. The shutdown, in place since October 1, has left hundreds of thousands of US federal workers unpaid, suspended food aid for millions, and disrupted air travel as staff shortages caused widespread flight cancellations.
