Sheikh Hasina sentence to death: Why is India shielding her? | DW News

A court in Bangladesh has sentenced the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. A guilty verdict was delivered at the end of a months long trial. The prosecution had sought the death penalty for Hasina and a former home minister. The trial was held in their absence in Dhaka. Both Hasina and the ex-minister Asaduzzaman Khan have fled from Bangladesh. She was charged with crimes against humanity over the deaths of protesters during an uprising last year. The UN says around 1,400 people were killed. Hasina is in India. She has defied court orders to return to Bangladesh, and says her conviction was politically motivated.
