Beneath the waters of Lake Iznik in northwestern Türkiye lies one of the most significant discoveries of early Christian archaeology — a basilica submerged for centuries. First spotted from the air in 2014, Turkish archaeologists have been uncovering the site stone by stone, revealing mosaics, tombs and pilgrim seals that link this church to the First Council of Christianity held in Iznik 1,700 years ago. With a historic papal visit approaching, the rediscovery highlights Iznik’s enduring role as a crossroads of faith and civilisation. Bera Karaman has this report from the historic basilica.
