Angry Lionel Messi fans throw chairs and invade pitch as star begins India tour

Lionel Messi fans have caused chaos in Kolkata after the football legend appeared at a stadium on the first day of his Indian tour.

Seats were ripped up, the stage was trashed and fans invaded the pitch at Salt Lake Stadium after anger erupted over Lionel Messi’s visit lasting just 20 minutes, despite ticket prices of up to £100.

The event’s chief organiser, Satadru Dutta, has been detained following the incident.
