New South Wales Police said that 12 people were killed in a shooting at Bondi Beach targeting the Jewish community – a further 29 people have been taken to hospital.
An event was being held at the beach to mark the start of Hanukkah that had more than 1,000 in attendance, police said.
A "night of peace and joy" was "shattered" by a "horrifying, evil attack", NSW Premier Chris Minns said.
One gunman has also been killed and a second suspect is in critical condition, police said.
