Toxic smog has blanketed India’s capital

Toxic smog has blanketed India’s capital as New Delhi’s air quality plunged to near-maximum “severe” levels, triggering emergency pollution curbs.

The air quality index in India’s most populous city surged to a hazardous 491 out of 500 on December 14, up from 441 the previous evening and among the highest rates in the world.

Authorities responded by restricting the entry of older diesel trucks, halting construction projects and shifting schools to hybrid learning. They are also urging vulnerable groups — including children and people with heart or respiratory conditions — to stay indoors and wear masks if they must go outside.

The megacity, home to over 30 million people, faces a spike in air pollution every winter as cold air traps emissions from traffic and other polluting human activities.
