A French court handed ex-rebel leader Roger Lumbala a 30-year jail term on December 15 over complicity in crimes against humanity during the Second Congo War in what activists hailed a "historic" verdict. He was found guilty of being the mastermind of atrocities including rape and torture in the country from 2002 to 2003. according to rights groups, the verdict is the first such conviction by a national court under the principle of universal jurisdiction.
