Greece’s suppression of Turkish-minority schools

Turkish-minority schools in Greece’s Western Thrace face chronic underfunding, reduced Turkish-language teaching hours and prolonged delays for repairs or new construction, with some operating in unsafe conditions.

Minority representatives say authorities rarely act on requests for improvements, forcing parents to move children to Greek-only schools, after which Turkish schools are suspended and closed for “low enrolment” — a process they describe as part of Greece’s long-standing forced assimilation policies.
