Nadhim Zahawi, Nigel Farage and a complicated relationship

The former Conservative chancellor Nadhim Zahawi has defected to Reform UK.

He made a speech saying he backs Nigel Farage to become Prime Minister – and that he believes the party will "deliver for the nation".

But the minister who was in charge of the COVID vaccine rollout is now a member of a party who has hosted vaccine sceptics.

And in 2015, he also called Mr Farage a "racist".

A Tory source has told Sky News Mr Zahawi stood down after asking the Conservative Party several times for a peerage – a claim he denies.
