As Tuesday marks one year since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, FRANCE 24 International Affairs Editor Kethevane Gorjestani examines his immigration crackdown. With crossings at the US – Mexico border at a historic low, Trump has shifted focus to deportations within the United States. “The strategy was to make life so miserable for people who do not actually have legal status that they would either not come or leave by themselves,” Gorjestani said. Citing figures from the US Department of Homeland Security, Gorjestani said more than 600,000 people were deported and 1.9 million self-deported. She added that the figures remain controversial, as no details have been provided on how they were calculated.
