European leaders are meeting in Brussels for emergency talks on transatlantic relations. They’re expected to discuss how to reduce reliance on the US for defense and trade.
Arriving at the summit, Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, said it was important for Europe to speak with one voice:
"When Europe is not divided and when we stand together and when we are clear and strong, also in our willingness to stand up for ourselves then the results will show. We have asked NATO to be more present in the Arctic region and I think everybody in the NATO agrees about that."
The meeting follows weeks dominated by Donald Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland. The US president had threatened to impose tariffs on goods from EU countries who expressed support for Greenland. He’s since reversed his position, after saying that he and NATO Chief Mark Rutte had secured a framework deal on the Danish-controlled territory – though the terms of that deal are still unclear.
