The Labour Party’s ruling national executive committee (NEC) has blocked Andy Burnham from running in the Gorton and Denton by-election.
Sky News understands that of the 10-person panel, the vote against Burnham was eight to one.
The one in support was party deputy leader Lucy Powell, and NEC chair and cabinet minister Shabana Mahmood abstained.
