Secretary of State for Scotland Douglas Alexander has told Sky News that Andy Burnham was blocked from running in the by-election as the party did not want a "psychodrama" playing out over the next few months.
It comes as MPs are calling on Sir Keir Starmer to change his mind and allow Andy Burnham to stand in the Gorton and Denton by-election – saying the decision to block him "is a real gift to Nigel Farage".
