The day is marked every year on 27 January, the day in 1945 the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp was liberated.
Altogether, the Nazis murdered 6 million Jews — or two-thirds of all of Europe’s Jews — in the Holocaust at Auschwitz and other camps, in ghettoes and in mass executions close to people’s homes.
