Israel partially reopened the Rafah crossing between the devastated Gaza Strip and Egypt on Sunday, after months of appeals from aid organisations, although access is restricted to pedestrians. COGAT, the Israeli Ministry of Defence body responsible for coordinating Palestinian civilian affairs, made no reference to allowing a long-awaited surge in aid, and stated that the movement of individuals through the crossing in both directions was expected to begin on Monday.
