Gaza Municipality, in co-operation with the UN Development Programme, has started clearing solid waste that engulfed Gaza’s Firas Market.
Authorities say the accumulation of waste in the city centre stems from Israel’s obstruction of municipal crews’ access to the main landfill in eastern Gaza. The two main landfills, Juhr al Dik and Sofa, remain inaccessible under full Israeli control. Measuring in at 350,000m³ and 13 metres high, the garbage poses a serious health and environmental risk.
