US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should receive a presidential pardon for corruption charges, adding that Israeli President Isaac Herzog should be “ashamed of himself” for not granting one.
Trump said Netanyahu had been a “great wartime prime minister” and that the Israeli people should “shame” Herzog for refusing to pardon him.
“The prime minister’s request is currently under review at the Ministry of Justice for a legal opinion in accordance with established procedures,” Herzog’s office said in response to Trump’s comment.
“Only upon completion of that process will President Herzog consider the request in accordance with the law and without any influence from external or internal pressures of any kind,” it added.
“Contrary to the impression created by President Trump’s remarks, President Herzog has not yet made any decision on this matter,” the statement said.
