A massive sinkhole in Pondok Balik Village, located in the Ketol district in Aceh, Indonesia, is expanding and triggering significant ground movement and landslides.
Footage on Monday, February 16, shows the geological phenomenon, which has reached a depth of approximately 100 meters and covers an area exceeding 30,000 square meters.
Local authorities warn that the unstable ground conditions could lead to further landslides at any time, particularly as heavy rainfall saturates the volcanic rock structures in the region.
The ongoing soil movement has already destroyed sections of the main road connecting Bener Meriah and Central Aceh, swallowed vast swathes of coffee and chili plantations, and forced the relocation of high-voltage electricity towers.
Due to the extreme risk to life, the Indonesian government has designated the site as a red zone, closing access to the general public completely.
