Giant tortoises are once again roaming the Galapagos island of Floreana, over a century after their ancestors went extinct. This week, 158 juveniles descended from the Floreana subspecies and raised in a breeding centre were released on the island. A landmark step in a massive project to restore the island’s biodiversity that will eventually see the re-introduction of 12 locally extinct species. FRANCE 24 spoke to Hugo Mogollon, CEO and President at the Galápagos Conservancy, one of the organisations leading the project.
